PR 56 - IT Asset Management

Effectively Managing The Asset Lifecyle From Procure To Retire Introducing George Spalding Executive VP Pink at Elephant as the new host of Practitioner Radio as we look at the importance and responsibilities of IT Asset Management and how it differs from but also complements IT Service Management. In the podcast George and I discuss some of the financial and legal drivers for doing a decent job of tracking and managing IT Assets. However the strategic perspective can be gained from understanding the definition of Stakeholder Value as described by COBIT 5. From a Governance view point Value is delivered by accomplishing 3 core tasks 1) Benefit Realization, 2) Risk Mitigation and 3) Resource Optimization. IT Asset Management can be clearly tied to all three in that to deliver stakeholder benefit IT Assets need to be implemented and managed effectively to ensure sustained business value generation. Risk Mitigation is accomplished by ensuring that the organization is not put in a position of liability or financial penalty by being out of compliance with legal and contractual obligations based on signed license agreements. Finally IT Asset Management supports the goals of Resource Optimization through the intentional stewardship of the business resources under the management of the IT organization. Without this laser focus on managing the assets under the care of the IT Function significant resources are wasted and often go un-accounted for. Regardless of your organization's interest in best practice frameworks you are responsible to track, manage and report on the assets under your care. That being the case, the maturity of the IT Asset Management practice in most organizations is in sad shape. For these and many other reasons Asset Management is a critical topic requiring attention, investment and improvement. Join George and I on this podcast as we explore this important topic and announce new IT Asset Management courses and certifications from Pink Elephant.
